Description

The listing, ONE TIME ONLY I-itoi multiplier onion BULBS (3) has ended.

A Slow Food "Ark of Taste" endangered vegetable. Great SURVIVAL FOOD to have just in case. Spicy red shallot that is sought after by many Chefs and it's popularity is growing very quickly still. It has a BOLD and spicy taste. If you love wild leeks or more bold tasting varieties of garlic, this really is a must to have. A lot of history about them that is impressive. I have successfully grown these inside during winter (zone 5a) and bringing them in again this year. Everything I've read about it's zone limits are to different, some say, will grow zone 6 to 9 so not taking chances, I bring them in. They grow in any soil except poor draining otherwise they are good to go.

Are these the type that multiply off a shoot? Bid, fanned and watching.

I don't believe they multiply off a shoot, not sure what you mean but during their active cycles, they keep producing more bulbs and I never run out of onion/shallots

I had an onion that sprouted a shoot with bulbils and it would lay over, the bulbils started new onions. Interesting, but I left them when I moved. Yours reproduce underground, I would place these near the garlic patch, after I grow indoors this winter...crossing fingers...

Here in northeast Tennessee, they call these wild onions ramps. There are festivals celebrating these onions every year! These grow wild all over my property, so when I mow during growing season, all you can smell for a couple of days is onions. They have a very strong flavor, with a slight hint of garlic, just like yours in PA. Early settlers and the indigenous Indians cooked with them, too. We have so many that I consider them more of a pest than anything. They are also invasive.
