Description

The listing, ANTIQUE LAST RITES CERAMONY CROSS has ended.

Hello everyone, some of you may know what this is, but for those who don't, A Last Rites cross is something
every Christian home had in the wilderness and settlements, wagon trains often carried them from there
homes into the wilderness. When in the day when Doctors, lawyers and Preachers would work the circuit or
district territories to tend to the people who couldn't make it in to town regularly. So they went to them, or fetched on by a love one who needed there help. When you thought a family member or friend was dying, you sent or
fetched the Doctor and then the Priest in the Catholic Religion. When the Priest arrived he set up this set if it
already wasn't. The cross opens and hold several small candles and a bottle for holy water. And then the last right would we prayed over the person. It measures 12 in
long and 7 in. wide and is in mint condition and never used. The candles and holy water are still wrapped.
Thank you for looking.

You are correct my friend, but in my times it was used to bless the house. My grandma used to use hers to bless the house when storms came. Never used the candles just the holy water. When it was empty she brought bottle to the church to refill and be blessed again. I was talking more our times :)

Sorry if I miss understood, I agree with you on that....time does change meanings
of objects. My grandmother also did the same and always had holy water in the
house for the same reasons.....thank you for that memory.

Very nice. I actually think this cross was used to bless the house. Since only the priest can give the last rights. Most houses had these to bless. I believe both my mom and grandmother had one. Maybe 60's 70's?

Well, when you come to my auctions, you can be assured that what I say it is, IS WHAT YOU GET. I do the research and over 35 yrs. of experience too. By the time your family had one in the home, it could have meant that to them. As I said in my description, the original origin of this cross was intended to give the last rights. As
priest and ministers were few and far between. Everyone in the early 1800's new the last rights prayers to give in case the priest / preacher couldn't make it in time.
Bye the 1950's every town had its on preachers for every denomination and they
didn't have to go far to bring a priest or preacher to there home. Before the 1940's
and 50's most people died at home, until hospitals also became a towns regular site. So I know I am right and you may be right too.
