Known as a naturalist who worked toward gaining popular and federal support of forest conservation, John Muir is credited with discovering an Alaskan glacier that bears his name. Muir spent six years in Yosemite Valley studying its forests and glacial rock formations. In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt established the Muir Woods National Monument, in Marin County, CA, honoring Muir's achievements.
