Mt. McKinley
Mount McKinley, also known as Denali, is the highest mountain in North America. It is located in the Alaska Range. A twin-peaked mountain, South Peak is higher at 20,320 feet (6,190 m); North Peak is 19,470 feet (5,934 m.). The mountain was named for William McKinley, before he became president, in 1896 by a prospector, W.A. Dickey. Previously, the mountain was known as Densmore's Peak. Mount McKinley has severe weather, with the upper two-thirds permanently snow -covered with winds to 100 mph near the summit. Much of the south face of the mountain was sheared off in 1912 as the result of an earthquake. The mountain is included in Denali National Park, established in 1917 as McKinley National Park.
