Adventure in a store is what Joan Peters, 17, looks for and finds during a summer job period that proves formative for her future in fashions. Inspired by her Aunt Kay who is a buyer for Crane's in Boston, Joan persuades her parents, who want her to study singing, to let her work as a stock girl. She eagerly goes to work with the aim of starting her career right away and advancing herself through job experience alone. First at another store and then at Crane's, Joan meets the people who begin to have their effect on her life too- especially Teresa who proves a staunch friend, and her Cousin Mike, a young executive at Crane's who takes a romantic interest in Joan. Aside from the merchandising principles Joan begins to learn, there is a store musical show which Joan helps put on, her parents' final decision to let her do what she wants, and Joan's own realization that a year at the Boston School of Fashion would be highly rewarding. In a light vein, this characterizes an occupation of wide appeal.
