In 1991,Space Shuttle mission STS-44, the ninth Department of Defense-dedicated Shuttle flight, deployed the Defense Support Program (DSP) satellite designed to detect nuclear detonations, missile launches and space launches from a geosynchronous orbit and undertook other Department of Defense sponsored classified and non-classified activities. This is the officlal patch for that space mission over 20 years ago. Things have changed with the shuttle gone and the U.S. now dependent of Russian space launches to take our astronauts to and from the international space station. Russia says they will quit carrying our astronauts in the coming year.
