Questions & Comments

This stamp shows the flag of Epirus.
From 1912 to 1916, when it was over run by Greece, this was a country comprised of parts of Albania and Greece.
The monetary unit is across the bottom of the stamp: 50 Lepta
It looks like: 50 AEnTA (but their's are Greek letters).
100 Lepta = 1 Drachma
The language is Greek and the stamp is from Epirus in 1914.
Today, Epirus is a part of Albania.

NOTE:
This is why every world collector must have a "Stamp Identifier", just to get a handle on where to look-up a stamp that is from a country that does not use their language.
Consider getting one; it is worth the investment!

Thanks for the great information. I actually received the All Nations Stamp Finder and Dictionary Saturday and found on page 19 the Epirus stamp! How thrilling. What a great book! Thank you again, GREAT information there.

Most countries spell their names in their own language and write with their own letter forms. Makes real sense, too!
To be a world collector, it is necessary to either learn everything in the whole world or get a reference book called a "stamp identifier", just to know what you are looking at. Get one to help you out.
It tells you things like this:

NIPPON is JAPAN.
OSTERREICH is AUSTRIA.
EAAAE (not correct letters but look alike) is the word "Hellas", which is Greece.
MAGYAR is HUNGARY.
EIRE is IRELAND.
HELVETIA is SWITZERLAND.
POLSKA is POLAND.
NOUVELLE CALEDONIE is NEW CALEDONIA.
RSA is REPUBLIC of SOUTH AFRICA.
Aytonomoe Hneipoe (not correct letters but look alike) is EPIRUS.
AND,
Deutschland, Deutsche Bundespost, Grossdeutsches Reich, Deutsche Reich Demokratische Republik, Deutsches Reich, and Deutsches Reich General Gouvernement, all refer to GERMANY.

It's not about you - or me.
Leaving these kind of comments is not about you or your auction, they are about sharing information that all "stampers" should know about - but apparently don't.
You provided the stimulus by putting up the items for auction and everyone should/can learn something from it and the comments.
It's a win/win situation for everybody, if they care, at all.
If they don't, why bother?
There's always eBay, among others!

I look at the stamps on Ebay a lot, to see what they are selling for, plus information on the stamps though i don't rely on that information to be genuine. I think each person collects stamps in different ways. While some are considered "serious" collectors, others collect for the fun of collecting. I can spend a couple of hours on one stamp, looking it up in catalogs, on line, then researching the country the stamp is from, what is on the stamp, what does it mean, etc.

Hey, anyone reading this stuff:
Don't just thank me for this "Great" information; CHECK the bloody, darn, carn-sarn, blasted, stinkin' (+) button, so I get some TINY little credit for my efforts -- OKAY! Is that too much to ask?
I'm actually spending my time trying to help you understand stuff about stamps, if you give some miserable darn. It is the least that you can do, I think.

If you don't care, at all; then don't do that.
I will shut-up, stop wasting my time, and go away...

Hi Chalsie,
I have the Scott Catalog in print and on CD but I like going online and finding out about stamps. Not only can I find out the Scott #, plus other catalog #'s it's also great to find out what other people have to say about the stamps. Stamp collecting is so much fun for me and I am learning a lot but have more to learn, LOLOL... Tomorrow I go visit my local Philatelic Society about joining. I'm so excited! Thank you so much!

Chalsie,
You seem to have a head on your shoulders, as well as being a loyal friend.
Have you read "Dune" by Frank Herbert? It won the Hugo Award (I think in 1955) partly for that very same allusion; "standing on the shoulders of someone else who is drowning", as well as, creating an entire language & culture for its setting. [Great read, bye the way!]
Yes, you are right.
I am not even trying to be down on "Sue".
The opportunity just arose for the context to address this curious Listia world.

So many Listians are ignorant (which by the way is NOT stupid), just uninformed, lazy, or opportunistic, and not sharing or questioning about what they actually seem to care about the subject of stamps.
Just HOW GOOD is that?????
[I find it wasteful, if not harmful - but, that's just me.]
Sorry for sharing...

But, I spent many years as a teacher. The one thing I always wanted to say to the students is: if you are not interested in this, GO AWAY - for now. You are just getting in the way of others who want to find something out. I'll be here to try to help - whenever you have any question or interest.

The quest for knowledge is the burden of the student. The burden of the educator is simply to help the student find his/her own answers, in his/her place.
[Almost all answers are right - and then wrong - in time.]
Google is a tool. A good tool - but it is only a new tool that does not know where it comes from, which means that it has no idea (and can not state) what it subsumes and thus eradicates, in the process.

I've truly enjoyed reading every comment that you have ever left since being on LISTIA. Thanks for all of your valued information and I hope to be a great collector of these beauties.

My collection was stolen and I have started again. So, to WHITEFOOTE & SNAILMAILGALPLA I appreciate every bit of info that you give. I also give kuddos to JOEYROTEN, CHALSIE, ELLEN, and every other person who are helping me build along the way!!

Appreciation to all of you...

Hi nmezaeklund,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a kind comment. I am so sorry to hear that your stamp collection was stolen. Do you collect anything specific? USA, WW, Mint only or used? Right now I am going through a bunch of foreign airmail stamps and am pulling out extras for a new auction.

I have not been collecting very long and don't know a whole lot but learn more every day. I try to spend at least 2 - 5 hours a day with my stamps, but I am so slow, lolol.

Whitefoote is one knowledgeable guy that's for sure! Ellen has some great stamps and I have won many of her auctions. Chalsie is a great person who takes a lot of time, thoughtfulness and even sends bonus at times. I have not yet had the pleasure to "meet" JoeyRoten, but look forward to it.

Thanks again so much for you kind words!
