I am a strong believer in leaving a cupboard for kids to explore.....not with knives and rat poison, of course, but maybe with pots and pans (noisy, but what the heck), or plastic containers......mostly harmless. When they get older, a treat cupboard, where they know the stuff in there is for them. Giving children a sense of ownership in the kitchen is a great bridge to responsibilities like learning to cook and keep it clean. My grandmother kept my mother out of the kitchen when my mom was little. My mother, as an adult, hated cleaning the kitchen and is a terrible cook. My children, on the other hand. Love the freedom and creativity they feel in a kitchen. They are still not particularly fond of cleaning it, but it IS the price you pay when you play.
