flatbed means it has a lid that opens and closes on the piece of paper and is a long rectangular shape. The other kind, you put the paper in like you would on a paper shredder.

Thank you SO much. This would be more like the paper shredder. It's a smaller unit. Measures about 7 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide.

I think this is more like a handheld scanner, I googled brookstone photo scanner and it gave that type of image description
