Questions & Comments
Nice stamp—but, too over-valued in Listia credits, I think, especially hinged. All the best to the winner, whatever he/she may be thinking—A or B. And that double vertical blank space above the "N" in cents is curious from what I have experienced. Any response/reply is welcomed as this is quite an interesting property! What am I not seeing here?
If you are using Scott's Specialized Catalogue of U.S. Stamps & Covers to ID this, I think you are confusing the way the listings are written. It is so confusing, that Scott placed a diagram in the introduction explaining how their listings are made-up : Understanding the Listings (on page 17A of my copy.) It is pretty helpful.
The Scott # is always listed first in a row (bold), next is the (not bold) illustration number, then the description, followed by the prices; example: 11 (#) - A7 (illus. #) - 10¢ blue - 16. - 20.
Under this line are listed all the minor variations with a (bold) lower case letter for each. In the case of this stamp there are five ( a, b, c, d, e.) Major variations will have a different Scott number.
So, the stamp would be 11. (Die A) is shown in the illustration A7. As a major variation, (Die B) is shown in illustration A8, and becomes Scott #12.
Thanks for the imput-sometimes, with all that i know , things can become confusing--i realized then that the stamp was not listed with the correct number--however, the a7 that i listed was an abbreviation for scott#csa7{confedrate stamp a7}this stamp is the 5 cent davis -the die a/b came from looking at a wrong line-the correct number for the 10 cent davis is scott#csa11/die a { confederate stampa11/die a-which retails used for $42.50
