Description

The listing, Piece of Old Wood with Date From 1782 Possible Shipwreck Souvenir has ended.

Here's a piece of old wood with a date from 1782 inscribed on it. I cannot read most of the writing due to the age wear but I definitely see "9th 1782 " on it!! The person who gave me this item said it was from an old shipwreck and this piece had been in her family for years. There is no COA to prove this. Item measures approx. 4.5" across and 2.75" tall.

Any idea as to what country it's from, or perhaps the name of the ship?

Beautiful piece, should be put into a museum. As an Archeologist, I would suggest for anyone who wins this item to have it looked at by a Historian and seek further guidance from him/her to see where it came from. Their are many ships listed for that year lost @ sea.

You are right ... this is a beautiful item. I wish I had the resources to have it checked out. I know items like this don't come around often.

Logically if the ship wrecked, why is there something inscribed on it? when would someone have inscribed a date on it? what do buyers think?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_America_(1782) This ship was scrapped due to dry rot. Makes more sense someone would save a piece of this ship and inscribe what it is from. If you look at the wood , clearly it has been cut with some type of saw or machine, obviously the wood is old..which makes it real. I'm sure in 1782 they din't recover ships from the bottom of the sea.

If this is a piece from USS America.. this could be worth billions. They are rebuilding USS America now.
