It's because they called Trout up in 2011, and his card appeared in 2011 Topps Update & Highlights. He only had 123 AB in 2011, and was still eligible to be considered a rookie in 2012 (a players still has rookie eligibility up to 130 at bats).

Curious, if that 2012 Topps of Mike Trout is his rookie, why does Beckett not list it as his rookie as well and why is the RC symbol not on the card like it is with all rookies?

This card is from topps series 2. 2012 is his rookie year, don't know why they wouldn't have it as a rookie. Srry not much help.
