Cocoa Paper is a line of handmade, sustainable paper derived from cocoa tree bark grown in the cocoa farming communities.

Taken from Cocoavia Website:

"How Cocoa Paper supports cocoa sustainability:

Uses sustainable inputs of approximately 60% cocoa bark and 40% recycled paper
Encourages the habit of pruning trees, a sustainable farming practice that results in healthier trees
Provides additional income to artisans and cocoa farming communities from where cocoa flavanols are derived and the paper is made

As cocoa tree branches are pruned, farmers strip the bark from the wood and sell it to our paper manufacturer so that it can be made into recycled cocoa paper for our products. The result is higher cocoa yields for farmers and additional revenue streams for families. They keep the stripped branches for themselves as they have valuable uses for cooking and starting fires. Bark stripping and pruning are only two ways that Cocoa Paper helps these communities."

Cocoa Paper FAQs

Q: How does Cocoa Paper help cocoa farmers?

A: We train cocoa farmers to effectively prune cocoa trees. Cocoa tree pruning has two benefits for the farmers. First, pruning maximizes plant production. Second, the bark that is stripped from the tree during the pruning process provides higher income as farmers sell this bark to make cocoa paper.

For those farmers who had not diligently pruned trees previously, the impact of being trained and motivated to prune cocoa trees can be an incredibly significant increase in farm income up to 40% due to cocoa productivity increases.

Q: How much cocoa bark goes into Cocoa Paper?

A. Cocoa Paper typically contains 60% cocoa fiber and 40% recycled office paper waste. In relation to weight, cocoa bark contains between 15%-20% fiber, thus 3kg of fresh cocoa bark or 1.5kg of dried cocoa bark is needed to produce 1kg of Cocoa Paper.

The left-over non-fiber bark material produced in the process becomes compost. The compost, containing high levels of nutrients especially Potassium and Phosphorous, are returned to the soil of the cocoa trees to produce the cocoa fruit.

Q: What happens to the waste that you produce in the Cocoa Paper making process?

A: Our goal is to improve lives of people in developing countries by achieving truly sustainable products that not only add value to existing waste streams but also enhance the usage of materials or skills. We pay very close attention to the way in which our products are produced and the waste streams from those processes.

In making Cocoa Paper we avoid using chemicals that are harmful to the environment such as harsh bleaches and chemicals. Making the final waste process a much more simple and effective process.

We recycle or composted all the solid waste from fiber extraction to the finished product. To meet accepted disposal standards liquid wastes are produced in the traditional paper making process are minimized by recycling and finally treated in living ponds.

Q: How is handmade paper different from mill-made paper?

A: We make Cocoa Paper using natural cocoa tree bark and recycled white office paper. There are no added chemicals or harmful dyes used in making handmade paper; it is safe for the environment and helps support the farmers and communities involved in the production.

By contrast, mill-made paper is generally made from wood pulp obtained by cutting down trees and by adding heaving chemicals and dyes; which are damaging for our environment.

Q: If I order multiple pieces of the same product, will they be exactly the same?

A. Cocoa Paper is handcrafted using handmade paper from sustainably produced recycled materials. Due to this process paper may vary. Minor variations that occur are a reflection of the natural variability in those materials and the process of creating them. We use the highest standards and finest materials to guarantee we deliver to you a product you will be satisfied with.
