Questions & Comments
Does this issue include a map ? Many years ago, they always had a nice folding map about every other issue (and I do happen to collect maps as well).
I'll ask Len to check tomorrow when he returns. And he or I will get back to you regarding maps in National Geograpfic. We may also have some foreign maps, and should have atlas ar two. Lisa.
I'm primarily interested in maps, an Atlas would have to be extremely old (pre-1940's for me to be interested). Of primary interest would be British Caribbean related maps from the 1700's to maybe 1950, Switzerland prior to 1900.... maps in general, but it kind of depends from where and when...
Peter, unfortunately we don't have National Geographic issues with old maps. We had couple, but sold them on e-Bay. We had only very recent issues with maps: November 2010 "Great Migrations" has a big folded detailed and nicely printed map of the entire world; and May 2013"Eyewitness of the Civil War" -- has folded map of Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland with marked battles on it. We are not map collectors; but may have old foreign map somewhere and we will have you in mind. We have unusual Russian World Atlas -- made in a form of miniature book (we have a small collection of those). It was published in 1985 or 1990 and is only 3 or 4 inches tall (small book 4 by 3 in). Thank you for your interest, Len.
We only started to go through old stash in our garage. We will have your request in mind -- if we have old maps (and we have a little bit of everything) we will let you know. We’ve just digged out old posters of Charlie Chaplin and other films, Chinese Acupuncture postures ... etc. Also, This auction is posted to see if there is an interest for National Geographic on Listia. We have 20 or 30 issues left (mostly 1989 - 2012) and will list them separately in a month or two (if there is some interest) .
Since National Geographic subscriptions are (were) fairly inexpensive (only about $1 to $3 per issue), it is doubtful that anything after the 1940's is worth much (postage costs will be well more than the value of the magazine!), but you never know, some people like me are simply into the old maps, while others may be interested in particular articles. So if you're listing these, you'll have to be very specific (ie: mention the specific articles). Peter
Peter, Thank you for your comment. You are absolutely correct on all points. However, some people are interested in National Geographic itself and like to have it at home ... for their kid's projects for example. So we were hoping to find these magazine lovers and sell them all that is left of our stash. By the way search for "National Geographic Magazine" on e-Bay brings up 24,512 entries and search for items sold within two weeks -- almost 6,000. Before 1970 issues usualy sells for $1.50 or even more and issues after 1975 for a dollar or so. Not much interest on Listia though. Len.
I suppose each venue (ebay, Listia, others) have their pros and cons. With ebay, it's actual money out of pocket to buy something, while at Listia, it's "points". Of course, Listia sells points, and it's hard to say what the real value of those points is. Based on the point value, I've gotten some things that are bargains, and others I've seen on Amazon sell for much less (based on the Listia selling price for the equivalent number of points).
I used to have a long run of Nat. Geo's back when my parents gave me a subscription, unfortunately they all ended up under water when my parents' basement flooded many years ago..., so I kind of lost my entire collection of magazines and the maps (some of which went back to the 1930's!).
I can only add that Listia credits have a huge inflation rate. Not long ago they sell 300 for a $1. Which makes it even harder to figure out what is a bargin on Listia purchases. We lost a lot of valuable stuff when we moved (and we moved a lot), once -- 40 years ago we lost all our belongings. But after we finally settled in NY we gathered a lot of staff over the years again ... and now we are out of space. We can't expand (we live on fixed income), so we have to sell or through away a lot of stuff. ... New and old.
