The Australian descended Chris Snelling, whose nickname is Yoda, was signed by the Mariners at age 17 in 1999, and he played with the organization through 2007, when he was traded to the Washington Nationals. Despite not playing in the majors since 2009, Snelling never retired and is still active in minor league baseball.

Chris Snelling's cap from April 17, 2007, in which Washington Nationals players wore Virginia Tech caps to show their support for victims of the Virginia Tech shooting, was sent to the Hall of Fame museum in Cooperstown for enshrinement.
