don't know what they are made of , but my father was a Sgt. in the army during the war and my uncle was in the navy. my mom had his navy peacoat. I remember asking her why she was cutting off the buttons.

oh I'm sorry, they are not metal, they are thick, like a hard guess it would be plastic. but they are rather heavy. not the same kind of plastic like regular buttons I'd say
