Gorgeous AMMONITE FOSSIL, 1' X 1 1/2"
Auction is for ONE (1) Intact and polished to a high gloss, Ammonite Fossil! These are oftentimes utilized to make unique pendants for jewelry. One method is to cap the cut end with a Sterling Silver cap and add a bail to form the pendant. Alternatively, and I think, by far the more beautiful and striking presentation, is to have the FOSSIL cut LENGTHWISE so that yo end up with two (2) mirror image Ammonite Fossils with the Interiors exposed!
Rarer than diamond, Ammonite is the fossilized remains of a squid-like creature that used jet propulsion to travel over 65 million years ago!
From the Paleozoic era to the end of the Cretaceous era, Ammonites jetted around the world’s oceans preying on smaller forms of marine life. For nearly 330 million years, they were abundant in all of the oceans until they suddenly became extinct, around the same time as the demise of the dinosaurs.
Ammonites were cephalopods (predatory marine mollusks) similar to the modern Squid, Octopus and chambered Nautilus. Ammonites were able to swim, thanks to the unique construction of their shell, which was divided into a series of air chambers. The air in the chambers provided buoyancy for the animal to float; like modern cephalopods, they probably moved through the water using jet propulsion.

Fanned and watching (Good grief! I wasn't a fan???? Lol! You KNOW I am !! One of your biggest fans!!) .For anyone looking , this man is the real deal! A great Listian!! And VERY trustworthy! Now tell me Crookedman, do you know what type of cutter one needs to cut this? I've always wanted to try it . I've seen some on JVC that look good (but I'd like to be sure before buying one!). Love the pics you posted!! Gorgeous!!

Well, It takes a pidary saw is what I'm told by my friend who should know. The secret is to find one with a thin enough blade that it doesn't remove too much of the ammonite during the sawing process. Most of these ammonites are only about a half inch thick, so to use a 1/16" - 1/8" blade doesn't leave much on either side to work with. As to a specific Brand name, I couldn't name one over the other, I would think that any quality supplier would have a good model out there, so it's pretty much up to your preference. I'd check with a rock shop, or a lapidary, maybe a jeweler's supply might recommend a good one, and perhaps a local community college that offers a certificate in Bench Jeweler might be willing to undertake cutting one in half as a class project, and allow you to monitor the class to learn...
