Hello Listia,
I have 2 Birmingham enamels up for bids. I am not really to sure on the history of them, but they are pretty cool. The winning bidder will receive both enamels and their boxes and 2 certificates of authenticity. If you have any questions just let me know and I can try to find the answer for you :)

The only thing I have ever seen these called are trinket boxes. I think they would be really good for storing pills or very small items. They are made by Toye, Kenning, and Spencer LTD of england.

From the certificate of authenticity: "known as 'toys,' these delightful trinkets and curiosities were formed in paper-thin copper and then totally encased in layer upon layer of enamel. Finally each box was decorated with delightful scenes, flowers, or sentimental messages by means of applying an outline transfer as a guide which was then hand-painted by artists in coloured enamels."

I suppose you could use them that way. I have mostly just used them for decoration, but I'm sure there are TONS of uses for them. :)
