Skeins are new, in original wrappers. They've been stored in a plastic bin in my smoke-free home since purchased at Michael's.

Is this similar to Loin Brand "Homespun"?

Yes, somewhat. But, having used both,I think the Lion Brand Homespun feels a little softer and a bit looser; the L&T Country loom feels more dense (I don't know how else to explain it). LB Homespun is considered a (5) in weight (bulky), whereas L&T Country Loom is a (6) in weight (super bulky). Both are softy and bumpy (don't you love these technical words... hehe), but by feel, LB Homespun feels more silky (L&T Country Loom feels rougher, though it's still very soft).

What size crochet hook would you use?

I'm not a crocheter (I knit...lol.. never learned to crochet), but the label recommends a 9 mm crochet hook (US, N-13). The gauge is visible in the third picture in the row of pictures beneath the big picture in the listing. I hope that helps!
