where do you use the code and does it get you a free item?

You use them on the webkinz website. I believe it's just www.webkinz.com

When you enter the code on the site it gives you a virtual pet. I haven't done it so I can't really tell you much more then that but I know a lot of people really enjoy it. If you're interested but unsure I recommend checking out their site and maybe even looking into some webkinz forums online. There should be a lot more info there. My kids sometimes get the stuffed animals but they are to little to play online so I figure I'll share the codes. Some people buy just for the codes though and then get rid of the stuffed animals, lol.
