Description

The listing, 1868 Shield Nickel, avg. circulated with nice sharp & full date has ended.

Average circulated Shield Nickel. Great shape for a filler in your coin folder or album. Nothing major wrong with this coin other than avg wear. One ding on the reverse half way in at about four o'clock. No holes or other mutilations.

December 2010 Coin Values Magazine has this coin listed at $25.00 in G4 condition and $30.00 in VG8
My personal opinion , this coin is somewhere between G4 and VG 8, but this is only my opinion. You can decide it's value with your bids.

Good luck and please check out my other auctions collectors. I will be listing some great coins and other items this week so check back often and see whats new.
Thanks for looking.

it looks like it has been drilled thru and repaired because the spot on the right side of the shield shouldnt be there. and it appears to be directly across from the sopt on the back. has this been drilled? i noticed you won this a couple weeks back from junkman cuz i was bidding on it too and noticed the repair in his auction. is that why you are reselling it?

Having the coin here to look at it's my opinion that it has been punched at one time. Probably during the coins earlier years as the color and wear on the revers of the coin at the spot in question are both consistent with the wear and color of the rest of the coin. Looking at both sides of the spot in question with a 30x loop I see no cracks around the ding nor do I see any fracturing or change in the color at even the closest view I can get of the area. I honestly think it was punched with something and what you see on the reverse, as you will notice is actually wider than the spot on the obverse, is the way the coin wore opposite of the punch. Something struck it pretty good on the obverse and pushed it out a bit on the reverse..
As far as a hole being filled :) well I suppose it is possible. But do you honestly think someone would put the effort in to match up the fill with the rest of the coin on an average circulated coin that at tops is worth maybe $20-$25. I doubt it but I guess it's possible. Besides if it was filled it was done a long time ago because the wear on the back at that spot is absolutely consistent with the rest of the coin.
To answer your question about is that why I am "reselling the coin""
:) Well.... I am not reselling it I am re listing it. When I bid on it I thought the coin could possibly grade at around VG-VF but when I got it I saw otherwise. So to answer your question , no. That is not why. :)
Good eye though my friend. Very clever. Maybe if this were a coin of significant value I could see somebody doing a nice plug on it but.... I Really don't think so.
So there you have it, thats my opinion and only that. Others may differ.

andyjm1989 Your high bid on it when you were bidding against me was 5024 credits. So you must not think the coin is that damaged :)
here's the auction link if anybody wants to see the description in the other listing of this coin:

thanks for the great question and thanks for looking. hope I at least get my credits back on it but I somehow doubt it now.

And I just realized that through out my entire answer to andy I had my references to the obverse and reverse opposite. :) so pretty sure everybody is good and confused now :)

never know ???? I'm not a profesional coin grader, just a hobby collector. In all my auctions I try to make it clear to folks that my opinion is only just that, an opinion. it is a science, however, I am not a scientist :)
thanks again for the question.

Tonight when the kids get to bed I will try to get a high res super close up for you Andy. I can blow these pics up pretty good, I'm using a 15 1/2 mp camera, but I will have to eliminate the color and mess with the contrast so you can see the edges of the spot. So the picture won't really look like anything to most folks but you should be able to see what I'm talking about. Once I'm done I'll send you a message with my email. If you want me to send the images to your email so you can inspect the coin better , simply send me a blank email to that email address with the subject nic pic and I'll attach the pics to an email for you. For you or anybody else that has concerns but only if I can actually get a good shot.
