The listing, Used U.S. Stamp #1161 4¢ Senator Taft Memorial-Possible Free Shipping has ended.
The Department issued this 4-cent stamp on October 10, 1960, through the Cincinnati, Ohio, post office in honor of Senator Robert A. Taft (1889-1953). Known by the nickname "Mr. Republican," Senator Taft was a staunch opponent to liberal economic policies. One of his most notable pieces of legislature was the Taft-Hartley Labor Act, in which he managed to garner enough support amongst the 80th Congress to thwart a veto by President Truman. The senator was afflicted with cancer just as his most influential days in office came about, having achieved the position of majority leader in January 1953. On July 31st, only six months after assuming this role, he died at the age of 63. Senator Taft was featured in President John F. Kennedy's book "Profiles in Courage."
