I quilt any fabrics, but the easiest is fleece. I don't do the fringe ties and I do add batting. They are a wonderful present or to keep. I would recommend just buying 2 pieces of cotton and batting to match the size and then make your quilt sandwich, batting in the middle :) make sure no bubbles -pull quilt on opposite sides, if you have a helper? and then tie where you want with yarn or cotton pearl, or crochet cotton. then either handsew hem or stitch around the outside, I actually do both steps as I do a decorative stitch. Start out super easy to see if you like, then progress at your own speed. Otherwise you run the risk of never quilting again. Good luck. I'm sure other people could give you advice too.
