Aristolochia elegans- 8 SEEDS!

Also known as Dutchman's Pipe, this SUPER EASY to grow and fascinating vine with is huge velvety mottled-red blooms is likely to steal attention from your other garden beauties! Adding to its show stopping looks this vine also plays host to the huge Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly, which is a marvel in itself.

Oh, there's one more unique thing about the Calico Vine with is large heart leaves...its carnivorous! Yes, this vine works night and day to keep your garden fly & pest free!!
ZONE: 8-12 HEIGHT: 6' Part shade.
Pest, disease, drought, humidity & heat resistant.

Dear Gardner's: Under the perfect conditions this vine can become invasive and therefore is not welcome in Florida, sorry. For all other warmer states-simply remove spent flowers to keep it from reseeding...we don't want little birdie's taking seeds to the Sunshine State.

Happy Growing!

That's what happens when you live in the perfect zone, lol. At least you can grow 99% of the plants most cannot. And it's not so much the gardeners at fault as the birds collecting and dropping seeds.

This surprises me. Did you see the 'Orchid Vine' that just ended? It would do well in 9-10.

I live in Ohio which is not in the right zone, is this so big I can't container garden it?

Sorry. Unfortunately, you have three things working against you-zone, its roots are too big for potting and....it's carnivorous, which is an awfully big fly eater for in the house :) The only vine I have listed right now that would stand your outside temps would be the Russian/Chinese Magnolia Vine which is a wonderful, healthy, edible berry. Plus many that adored living inside.

Oh yes, I can't think of anything that wouldn't grow in California and it's good you already know the rules. Did want to note something I just read: because it is carnivorous, its bloom produces a nasty smell to attract its dinner of flies. Therefore, plant in a spot for viewing...not smelling!

Hey Louis :) Sorry...your in Zone 7a which is too cold for this outdoors tropical. The only vine I have that would survive your winter is the Chinese Magnolia Vine, which is an edible berry and super healthy for you.

Not yet, Louis. Just moved onto 5 acres of land in zone 8- so next spring I hope to grow most of the plants I have listed (and sell living vines as well) including Calico. I'm excited to see this one grow it's so unique.

The good news is-they have changed your zone from a 5 to a 6 due to warmer winters-which means you have more planting options :)
The bad news is-it's still too cold for this tropical beauty :( and it's roots are to large for potting for indoors. So sorry...did you see the Chinese Magnolia Vine I have listed-it survives -30 degrees!!

It's fabulous that you take the time to answer zone questions and let us know what will grow where!!! Thank you, and I hope that sometime you have seeds or bulbs that work in Ohio, I will definitely bid when you do!!

Why thank you Cynline! We're all gardeners here so I'm enjoying myself and happy to help when I can. Yes, Ohio is a bit chilly for tropicals, but I do have one awesome vine that can survive -30 degrees you might take a peek at...it called Chinese Magnolia and its a healthy edible vine :))

Can this plant be grown in indirect sunlight and shade? thank you
Oct 17th, 2013 at 6:15:21 PM PDT by
Original
Yes, it actually prefers part shade and doesn't do as well in blazing sun. Thank you, I should add that notation to the listing :)

How about Minnesota? Twin Cities area.

Sorry, your zone is 4a and freezing most of the winter. Calico's roots probably wouldn't survive. If you click on my icon you'll see one listed that is beautiful, edible, healthy and survives temps of -30 degrees called, Chinese Magnolia Vine :)
