The listing, Nutrient Agar for Science Experiments Grow Bacteria! has ended.
Looking for a way to promote education to your kids at home? What about a fun activity? Want to SHOW your kids the reason why they need to wash their hands? I have your solution.
Everyone knows that bacteria is everywhere, even though we can’t see it, but have you ever tried to GROW it? This is something I did many times in my college biology and microbiology classes, and it was always fascinating and fun, and more importantly, EASY.
Nutrient agar is used as a culture medium (a very bacteria-friendly substance), to grow various household bacteria. This bottle will provide enough agar (food), for 20 – 10 petri dishes, and detailed agar preparation instructions are included. Remember that without an incubator, it will take time for your samples to grow, so be patient!
Instead of a petri dish, you can use a small, disposable plastic container. Ziplock, I think, makes a round 1-cup container that would be perfect, and comes in packages of 6, if I remember correctly. Also, you can divide each agar surface in half or quarters by drawing lines with a permanent marker. Remember, DO NOT REUSE CONTAINERS. DO NOT TOUCH BACTERIA. DO NOT REMOVE LID FROM CONTAINER AFTER BACTERIA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED ONTO IT. INHALING SAMPLES COULD MAKE YOU SICK. THROW AWAY ALL SAMPLES AND CONTAINERS WHEN DONE.
