The listing, 1937-D 3 LEGGED BUFFALO NICKEL has ended.
This nickel was in my fathers collection that he left me when he passed away. i am not sure if this is a real 3 legged buffalo nickel or a fake. see pictures and judge yourself. i am not an expert so i can't guarantee this is the real thing.
I'm not an expert, but in comparing it to pics I have of the 3-legged buffalo nickel I used to own, I'm pretty sure yours isn't real. A guy who's owned a coin store for years showed me how to tell if a 3-legged buffalo nickel is real. If I'm remembering correctly, 3-legged buffalo nickels came into being because the dies used to make them were getting worn and/or damaged. Because of this, you can see apparent "wear" on the back of the Indian's neck and on the right back leg of the buffalo. Also, the hoof of the missing leg should be visible, with the space where the leg is supposed to be should be smooth. I do not see any of these signs on your coin, and it actually looks like there's a gouge where the leg should be, which suggests to me that someone removed the leg from a regular 1937-D buffalo nickel.
Very good info. However if I may I would like to offer another opinion. I think this is a replica rather than an altered coin. Looking at the date. When compared to any buffalo nickel this date looks almost cartoonish instead of crisp and defined, I am also an amatuer collector and have no extensive training the slight smearing of the 9 and 3 could possibly be normal wear but it's unlikely the rest of the coin is too clean and new looking to have the date smeared in such a way. If it was real in this condition your looking at a $500-$800 coin
